economy
Agriculture
Chicoana is mainly dedicated to the cultivation of tobacco and, secondarily, vegetables.
tourism
Chicoana has retained the flair of a traditional, saltic place in its architecture and through its urban maintenance, in which the central square stands out. Another factor is its location, not far from the road that leads to the Cabra Corral reservoir (12 km) and from there through the Quebrada de las Conchas to the wine village of Cafayate . Chicoana is also considered the gateway to the Quebrada de Escoipe on the way to Cachi , another well-known tourist attraction in the province of Salta . The landscape was selected in 1941 as the set for one of the classics of Argentine cinema ( La Guerra Gaucha ) about the independence struggle of the northwest. A pre-Columbian archaeological site is located near the site.
Festivals
The traditional cityscape and location make Chicoana a transit point on the way to other tourist destinations in the province. Chicoana advertises its festivals and offers in rural tourism (riding tours, hikes, overnight stays in fincas, traditional food).
- Festival del Tabaco (August 1st): The "harvest festival" for the main crop in the area, tobacco.
- Festival del Tamal : The tamal is one of the corn dishes of the northeast and is the focus of the festival.
