Alto Río Senguer is a small town in the southwest of the Argentine province of Chubut in Patagonia . It is the administrative center of the Río Senguer department . The city now has around 1700 inhabitants and is located on Ruta Nacional 40 .

Origin of name

The word Senguer comes from the Tehuelche language of the Patagonian indigenous people . There it is called singer or angel , which means ford . In the place of the city there is a natural passage over the Río Senguer .

history

Alto Río Senguer was founded on April 1st, 1943. After the name of the first family who built a house there in 1915, the place was initially called Paso Schultz .

Economy and tourism

The economy of the place has always been shaped by cattle breeding. Sheep breeding plays a bigger role than cattle breeding. The area around the city is divided into a number of large-scale agricultural goods. The city also has an airport ( IATA code : ARR).

In the region there are camping and trekking Riding, ornithological excursions, the hunting of red - and black game and the sport of fishing. In the tributaries of the lakes of the region, the Plata lake and Fontana Lake has one of the world's largest trout populations (Salvelinus fontinalis) . With an average weight of 1 kilogram, the fish reach significantly more than usual for this species.
