The Escalante Department is located in the southeast of the Chubut Province in southern Argentina and is one of 15 administrative units in the province.
It borders the Paso de Indios , Mártires and Florentino Ameghino departments to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Santa Cruz province to the south and the Sarmiento department to the west .
The capital of the Escalante department is Comodoro Rivadavia .
The department was named after Dr. Wenceslao Escalante , a Minister of Agriculture during the presidency of Julio A. Roca .
