The Florentino Ameghino Department is located in the east of the Chubut Province in southern Argentina and is one of 15 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered to the north by the departments of Gaiman and Rawson , to the east by the Atlantic Ocean , to the southwest by the department of Escalante and to the west by the department of Mártires .

The department was named after the Argentine naturalist, paleontologist, anthropologist and zoologist Florentino Ameghino (born September 18, 1854, † August 6, 1911).
