The department of Cushamen is located in the northwest of the province of Chubut in southern Argentina and is one of 15 administrative units in the province.

It borders the province of Río Negro to the north, the Gastre department to the east, the Languiñeo and Futaleufú departments to the south and Chile to the west .

The capital of the department of Cushamen is the eponymous Cushamen .

In the Tehuelche language , the place name means solitude .
