Rada Tilly website |
Rada Tilly is a place in the Patagonian part of Argentina on the Gulf of San Jorge . It is located 10 km south of the town of Comodoro Rivadavia and forms an agglomeration with it.
Rada Tilly is considered the southernmost seaside resort on earth. There are also beaches in the further south, but tourism does not play a significant role in these.
geography
The place is located in a semicircular bay with a flat sandy beach, which is bordered in the south by the Punta Marqués peninsula . The climate is temperate with an average of 19 ° C in summer and 6 ° C in winter, rainfall is around 200 mm per year and the water temperature fluctuates between 8 and 19 ° C.
population
In addition to its function as a seaside resort, Rada Tilly also functions as a dormitory for Comodoro Rivadavia. The growth is among the fastest in Chubut Province. The population rose by 111% between 1991 and 2001.
history
When the Gulf of San Jorge was mapped in 1794, the peninsula that bounds the bay to the south was given the name Punta del Marqués de Casa Tilly in honor of a Spanish margrave who had made fame in particular during the war against Portugal. It was not until 1926, a decade after Comodoro Rivadavia was founded, that the beach was used as a seaside resort by the inhabitants of this town, and the first restaurant followed in 1929. The final establishment took place in July 1948, when the municipal boundary was set and thus the place was separated from Comodoro Rivadavia. Since then, Rada Tilly has quickly grown into the most populous seaside resort in Patagonia - after the port city of Puerto Madryn .
economy
The economy of the place is determined by the service sector. The tourism , especially the weekend tourism from Comodoro Rivadavia and other nearby towns out here occupies the first rank.
Culture and sights
Rada Tilly has a small casino but few cultural sites. There is a small regional museum and a public library. The greatest attraction is the Punta del Marqués peninsula, on which there is a nature reserve. In summer, a regionally important rugby tournament takes place on the local beach.
