Gastre is the capital of the Gastre department in the Chubut province of southern Argentina . In the classification of municipalities in the province of Chubut, Gastre is classified as a rural municipality ( Comuna Rural ).
history
The area was settled in 1904 and only developed slowly.
The name of the place is derived from the Tehuelche expression Gástrrek , which is used to describe a widespread bush in the region. The Tehuelche used its ground roots to eat mixed with fat or water. Another meaning of the place name could be striped square .
economy
In Gastre, livestock farming dominates in the form of sheep breeding. The area is rich in mineral resources (lead, silver, zinc, copper, gold) that are exploited in the Angela mine. In the zone there are facilities of the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica ( CNEA ), which for many years studied the possibility of setting up a nuclear repository .
