The Department General Pedernera is located in the east of the province of San Luis in the western center of Argentina and is one of 9 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered by the Coronel Pringles and Chacabuco departments to the north, the province of Cordoba to the east, the Gobernador Dupuy department to the south and the Juan Martín de Pueyrredón department to the west .

The capital of the General Pedernera Department is Villa Mercedes .
