history

Before the arrival of the whites, Mapuche and Tehuelche settled the region. During the desert campaign , Julio Argentino Roca's troops defeated the indigenous peoples. The purpose of the campaign was to ensure Argentina's dominance over Patagonia . In 1882 the army reached the valley in which the present city is located. This is where the first fort in the area was built.

In 1883, on behalf of Cardinal Giovanni Cagliero, a later expedition was carried out into the valley of the Río Chimehuín to found a settlement. The leader of the expedition, Miguel E. Vidal, chose the location for the construction of a new fort and is therefore considered to be the founder of the city.

Initially, most of the residents were military. An important wave of settlers came to the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city became a major cattle breeding center in its province.

1955 the place was declared together with San Martín de Los Andes and Cutral-Có by national regulation to the municipality. It is considered the oldest municipality in the province.
