The department of Almirante Brown is located in the west of the province of Chaco in north-west Argentina and is one of the province's 25 administrative units .
It is bordered on the northwest by the province of Salta , in the north-east by the Department of General Guemes , in the east on the Maipú Department , on the southeast by the Departamento Independencia , on the south by the departments of General Belgrano and Nueve de Julio and to the west by the province of Santiago del Estero .
The capital of the Almirante Brown department is Pampa del Infierno . It is 237 kilometers from the provincial capital Resistencia and around 1,265 kilometers from Buenos Aires .
The department was named after William Brown (1777-1857), Irish- born Commander in Chief of the Argentine Navy.
