The Department of General López is located in the south of the province of Santa Fe in central Argentina and is one of 19 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered to the north by the departments of Caseros and Constitución , to the east and south by the province of Buenos Aires and to the west by the province of Córdoba .
The capital of the Department of General López is Melincué .

According to INDEC estimates, the population increased from 182,113 inhabitants (2001) to 194,754 inhabitants in 2005.
National roads
The Ruta Nacional 33 from Bahía Blanca to Rosario runs through the department and connects its three largest cities Rufino (km 535), Venado Tuerto (km 632) and Firmat (km 688).
From Buenos Aires the Ruta Nacional 8 lead to Venado Tuerto, the Ruta Nacional 7 to Rufino.
