The General Alvear Department is located in the northeast of the Corrientes Province in northeast Argentina and is one of the province's 25 administrative units .

To the north and east it is bordered by the Department of Santo Tomé , to the east and south by Brazil , separated by the Río Uruguay , and to the west by the Department of San Martín .
