Mercedes is a department in the center of the Corrientes Province in northeastern Argentina and one of the province's 25 administrative units . With 9,588 km² it is the largest department in the province in terms of area, with 39,206 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ).

The department of Mercedes is bordered by the departments of San Roque , Concepción and Ituzaingó to the north, by the departments of San Martín and Paso de los Libres to the west, by the department of Curuzú Cuatiá to the south and by the department of Lavalle to the east .
