history

Molinos was founded in the middle of the 17th century when the Spanish crown Diego Diez Gómez gave an area of land in the central Valle de Calchaquí, which included the present Molinos department and parts of the San Carlos department , to the encomienda . A descendant of this family married the general Domingo de Isasmendi , who had been used in the fight against the Calchaquiés. At this point, Molinos had already developed into the only significant village in the western Calchaquí Valley and until the first years of the 20th century the place was on the most important trade route between Salta and Chile.

In 1775 the son of General Isasmendi, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi , inherited the lands and the hacienda reached the height of its prime. Six years later he fought against the rebellious Indians of the Tupac Amarú. As the last royal Spanish governor, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi transferred the authority of the province of Salta to Feliciano Chiclana , the envoy of the Junta de Buenos Aires . After his death in 1837 the importance of the place gradually decreased.

tourism

Molino's location between the tourist attractions of Cafayate and Cachi has contributed to the fact that this highland wine-producing town is also gaining increasing interest. Restored historical buildings, including the church and the hacienda of the Isasmendis, contribute to the attractiveness as well as an exclusive hotel and restaurant (Colome).

Well-known tourist destinations
Iglesia de Molinos
  • Iglesia de Molinos . The church was built at the end of the 18th century at the instigation of the last royal Spanish governor of Salta, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi , whose remains rest in the church. It is dedicated to St. Peter Nolascus . The church originally belonged to the encomienda of Molinos before it was handed over to the church in 1760. The parish of Molinos was founded in 1826. The church consists of a nave with chapels on either side. In 1942 it was declared a National Historic Monument. Due to its proximity to the river and the large amount of saltpeter in its walls, the existence of the restored church is in danger in the long term.
