Trancas is the capital of the Trancas department of the same name in the province of Tucumán in northwestern Argentina . The municipality is located north of the provincial capital San Miguel de Tucumán .
history
According to legend, the name Trancas is derived from a Quilmes warrior named Chancas , who is said to have accompanied San Francisco Solano on his missionary trips.
- Around 1600 the first settlement emerged under the name Pozo del Pescado .
- In 1760, when the Jesuits built the first parish church in the Villa de Trancas, the settlement was a resting place for travelers to Salta.
- In 1763 the place was moved three kilometers to the south.
- On August 7, 1816, General Manuel Belgrano took command of the Ejército del Norte in Trancas , replacing General José Rondeau . During the Wars of Independence , especially during the Batalla de Tucumán , Trancas was a strategically important place for the defense of the north.
- In 1820, the Coronel Bernabé Aráoz was appointed first gobernador of the República de Tucumán .
- In 1824 the same Aráoz was shot on the south wall of the church of Trancas.
- On October 12, 2009, the cacique and human rights activist Javier Chocobar was murdered in Chuschagasta , a Diaguita settlement in Trancas.
The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Trancas Viejo (in Trancas Viejo, approx. 2 km from the town center) was built by the Jesuits in 1760 and destroyed by an earthquake in 1826 . Today's church was built on the foundations, an example of the unadorned post-colonial architecture of the first half of the 19th century. The church with its whitewashed adobe walls is the only building that has survived from the old Trancas, called Villa Vieja. It consists of the bell tower, the nave and the chapel. The interior of the church is kept simple, with choir stalls as a transition zone to the interior and the chapel in the background. In religious art (possibly from an Alto Perú workshop) are the figures of the patron San Joaquín, San José and a Nazarene.
The Argentine sculptor Lola Mora was baptized in this church . In 1957 the church was declared a Monumento Histórico Nacional .
