The Formosa Department is located in the southeast of the Formosa Province in northern Argentina and is one of nine administrative units in the province. It is bordered by the Pilcomayo Department in the north, Paraguay in the east, the Laishí Department in the south and the Pirané Department in the west .

The capital of the department Formosa is the same Formosa .


According to INDEC estimates , the number of inhabitants in the Formosa Department rose from 210,071 (2001) to 248,349 inhabitants in 2005.


The Department of Formosa is divided into Formosa , a first category municipality, the Comisiones de Fomento Colonia Pastoril , Gran Guardia and San Hilario , the Juntas Vecinales Provinciales Mariano Boedo , Mojón de Fierro , Villa del Carmen and Villa Trinidad .
