The department of Calingasta is located in the west of the province of San Juan in western Argentina and is one of 19 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered by the Iglesia department to the north, the Sarmiento , Zonda and Ullum departments to the east, the Mendoza province to the south and Chile to the west .
With 0.4 inhabitants per square kilometer, the department, which takes up 25% of the area of the entire province, is extremely sparsely populated. Fewer people live in an area larger than Hesse than in Rüdesheim am Rhein .
The capital of the Calingasta department is Tamberías .
