The Schouten Island is a small uninhabited island south of the Freycinet Peninsula , located in the northeastern Australian state of Tasmania is. Schouten has been part of the Freycinet National Park since it was founded.

The highest point on the island is Mount Storey at 371 m above sea level. The coastline is characterized by rocky cliffs and sheltered bays. There is also a lighthouse on the island.

history

Kitchen waste found on Schouten indicates that the island was already inhabited before the arrival of the first Europeans. In 1642 the island was discovered by Abel Tasman and named after Joost Schouten , a merchant and diplomat of the Dutch East India Company .

In 1802 a French expedition led by Nicolas Baudin landed on the island. After the discovery of coal by the seal hunter John Stacey in 1809, coal and tin mining began on the island. Plans aimed at luring more workers to the island through coal mining were never realized and coal mining finally stopped in 1925. Sheep grazing was carried out on the island from 1850 to 1969.
