Rosario de Lerma is the capital of the Rosario de Lerma department of the same name in the province of Salta in north-western Argentina . It is located 35 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Salta , 13 kilometers southwest of Cerrillos and 11 kilometers south of Campo Quijano .
geography
The territory of the municipality of Rosario de Lerma is crossed by the Río Rosario from north to south . A distinction is made between three zones within the municipality:
- The mountainous, essentially inaccessible, western bank zone of the river, which is only sparsely populated,
- The fertile plain east of the river, which is mainly used for tobacco cultivation and whose rural population includes 3000 people
- The urban zone in the center of the fertile agricultural area.
history
In 1787, the governor Mestre handed over the land on the Río de la Quebrada del Perú to Josefa Valdés , who was married to Juan Torino de Viana . In 1802 the small settlement was mentioned as Rosario de los Cerrillos . The Parroquía del Rosario parish was founded by detachment from the parish of Chicoana on the instructions of Bishop Moscoso in 1773. In 1870 the name Rosario de Lerma appeared ; In 1875 he was mentioned in the constitution of the department of the same name.
economy
The Rosario de Lerma department is a region that mainly produces tobacco and is also processed on site. In addition, beans, corn and vegetables are grown. The livestock industry is dedicated to raising cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and poultry.
