Location of Cerrillos

Cerrillos is the capital of the eponymous department of Cerrillos in the province of Salta in northwest Argentina . It is located in the center of the Valle de Lerma and is therefore called the geographic heart of the valley. The distance to the provincial capital Salta is 15 kilometers. It has a strategic position within the province of Salta because it enables mandatory access to the Valle de Lerma and the Valles Calchaquíes. In the classification of the municipalities of the province it belongs to the municipalities of the 1st category with 17,634 inhabitants. In terms of area, however, it is the smallest municipality with 224 km².

Via the Ruta Nacional 68 , Cerrillos is connected to the wine and excursion town of Cafayate. The Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano railway , the famous tren a las nubes , also runs through the village .

The climate is subtropical with a dry season.

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the area was inhabited by Pulares, Guachipas, Chicoanas and Quilmes.

During the War of Independence against Spain, an important contract was signed in Cerrillos between the independence fighter Martín Miguel de Güemes and General José Rondeau .

The city was founded in 1822.
