San Roque is the capital of the eponymous department of San Roque in the province of Corrientes in northeast Argentina . In the classification of communes in the province of Corrientes, San Roque belongs to the 2nd category.

The place can be reached via the Ruta Provincial 19 and Ruta Provincial 121 , as well as via the Ruta Nacional 12

history

  • The foundation of San Roque took place on October 11, 1773 by the governor of the Gobernador Juan García de Cossio and the pastor Antonio de la Trinidad Martínez de Ibarra on the left bank of the Río Santa Lucía , at the ford Paso San Blas . The foundation was originally supposed to take place on the day of the namesake, August 16, but had to be postponed because of the armed conflict between the indigenous people and the Spaniards.
  • In 1782 the seaman and writer Félix de Azara mentioned San Roque as one of four parishes in Corrientes.
  • In 1825 the settlement was declared a villa .
  • In 1865, during the Paraguayan occupation of the province, the provincial gobernador, Coronel Manuel Ignacio Lagraña, withdrew to San Roque and transformed the town into the provincial capital.
  • On August 6, 1867, the place is declared a municipality ( Municipio ) and becomes the capital of the department of the same name.
