history

According to the historian Lizondo Borda , the name Tafí comes from the 16th century and was pronounced Taui . This was a corruption of the word thaaui from the language of Aymara and means something like place where a cool wind blowing or cold place. If you divide the Aymara word into its component parts, would thaa the importance of cold and ui would be the localization of the place where it's cold. This interpretation is supported by the location of the city at the foot of the Aconquija massif.

Tafí Viejo began as the provincial capital's summer resort. The city owes its growth and development to the Talleres Ferroviarios de Tafí Viejo . The railway workshops were the main employer until they were closed in 1980. They led to the establishment of further companies in their area and contributed to Tafí Viejo becoming one of the economically most prosperous communities in the Tucumán province. On June 2, 1939, Tafí Viejo was raised to the rank of Municipalidad .

In contrast to most cities in Argentina, the institutional and commercial center of the city did not develop around Plaza Central, but along Avenida Leandro N. Alem, that is, west of the railway workshops.

With the decline of the railway as a means of transport, the economic impetus from the railway workshops also subsided. Even its reopening on a smaller scale on January 24, 1984 by the Raúl Alfonsín government could not stop the economic and social decline.

Tafí Viejo became the capital of the Tafí Viejo department through the territorial reorganization of the Tucumán province in Ley Provincial 4518 in August 1976.
