Sarmiento is the capital of the Sarmiento department in the Chubut Province in southern Argentina . In the classification of municipalities in the province of Chubut, Sarmiento is classified as a municipality ( Municipio ) of the 1st category. Sarmiento is 140 km west of Comodoro Rivadavia .
history
Sarmiento was founded on June 21, 1897 by the engineer Francisco Pietrobelli . The place was initially settled by Welsh immigrants. At the beginning of 1900 more settlers came from Lithuania . After the defeat in the second Boer War, 120 Boers reached the new settlement. Their descendants still make up a large part of the population today. Some of them still speak Afrikaans and still attend the Dutch Reformed Church .
economy
The location in a valley between Lake Musters and Lake Colhué Huapi enables the cultivation of fruits such as cherries and raspberries .
Attractions
The two most important sights are the Petrified Forest and caves with paintings of the indigenous people.
