The Noreste region (NEA) is a major Argentine region. It includes the north and northeast of Argentina. Since 1999 it has been merged with the Región Noroeste Argentino to form the so-called Región Norte Grande .

The region includes the following provinces:

Data

The area of the region is 289,699 square kilometers, its population is 3,356,495 (2001). The population growth is 1.8% per year and the population density is 11.6 people per square kilometer.

Important cities

The cities of Corrientes (316,782 inhabitants) and Resistencia (359,590 inhabitants) on the Río Paraná , which are particularly characterized by the agro-industry , are the most important cities in the region. This is followed by Posadas (279,961 inhabitants) and Formosa (198,074 inhabitants), as well as the regional centers Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña in the Chaco and Oberá in Misiones.

geography

The west of the region is shaped by the savanna-like plain of the Gran Chaco , which is humid in the east, but relatively dry in the west. In the eastern provinces of Corrientes and Misiones you can find the marshland of Corrientes, which is still part of the pampa plain, as well as the subtropical rainforest of Misiones. There are also the only notable mountain ranges in the region with up to 850 meters.

economy

The region is particularly characterized by agriculture and cattle breeding, which are practiced extensively. A specialty is the yerba mate cultivation in the province of Misiones. Forestry is also widespread throughout the region, as many valuable types of wood grow here. Attempts are made to keep this under control, as a large part of the forest area, especially in Misiones and in the southern Chaco, has already been cleared and these areas are partially threatened by devastation.

Overall, the four provinces are among the poorer in the country, with the exception of the Chaco province, which has been emerging in recent decades. The gross national product per capita in Formosa, on the other hand, is the lowest in the entire country, with more than 50% of the population living on social assistance.

Projects

Similar to the Región Noroeste Argentino in the north-west of the country, the Corredor Bioceánico, the connecting road between the Atlantic and Pacific, is also used in the north-east, which is intended to give the region economic impetus, especially in the less developed west.

tourism

The most important center of tourism in the North Argentine are the waterfalls of Iguazú , the most water-rich in the world, in the jungle of Misiones. Just like Iguazú, the Jesuit reductions in Misiones have the status of World Heritage Sites , such as San Ignacio Miní . In addition to Iguazú, the region offers a second national park, the Río Pilcomayo National Park in Formosa. Another tourist attraction is the Carnival in the Corrientes province.
