Life

Ludwig Wichmann was born in 1788. His older brother was the sculptor Karl Wichmann . From 1800 he learned as a student in Johann Gottfried Schadow's studio , among other things he was involved in the execution of the Blücher monument in Rostock and the Luther monument in Wittenberg .

From 1809 to 1813 he lived in Paris and worked in the studios of François Bosio and Jacques-Louis David . After his return to Berlin, he worked again in Schadow's studio. In the years 1818 to 1826 he participated in the statue decoration of the national monument for the wars of liberation designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel , eight genii as allegories of the victories in the wars of liberation with portrait heads of members of the royal family and of military commanders. When Christian Daniel Rauch and Christian Friedrich Tieck were called in to the project because of time pressure , he carried out the genius of the battle of Katzbach and the genius of the battle of Bar-sur-Aube according to his own and six other genii based on the designs of the two other artists. In 1818 he was after the death of Emanuel Bardous his successor as teacher of Bossier - and Modellierklasse at the Berlin School of Applied Arts. In 1819 the Prussian Academy of the Arts made him a member.

Together with his brother he spent the years from 1819 to 1821 in Italy , especially in Rome . After their return, the brothers founded a studio specializing in portrait busts. In 1832 Ludwig Wichmann was appointed professor at the art academy.

For his father-in-law, the pottery manufacturer Tobias Feilner , Ludwig Wichmann modeled terracottas , among other things for his house designed by Schinkel. The figure of the Archangel Michael at the Friedrichswerder Church was also executed in fired clay based on his model.

In later years he stayed again in Rome in 1851/52, 1854/55 and 1857/58.

Ludwig Wichmann died in Berlin in 1859 at the age of 70 and was buried in the Luisenstadt cemetery . The tomb has not been preserved.

He was the father of the genre painter Otto Wichmann and the composer and writer Hermann Wichmann .
