Karl Wichmann

Carl Friedrich Wichmann , (born June 28, 1775 in Potsdam , † April 9, 1836 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Wichmann, the son of a sculptor, made his first work in his father's studio, a fight between Heracles and the Nemean lion . His father, thus convinced of his talent, gave Wichmann an apprenticeship with the sculptors Boye and Unger . He later became a student of Johann Gottfried Schadow .

In Berlin he was friends with the sculptors Christian Daniel Rauch and Philipp Wolf , the painters Rosentreter and Karl Kretschmar and the die cutter Johann Ludwig Jachtmann . In 1819 he went to Italy with Rudolf Schadow . There he met his younger brother Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann , with whom he founded a studio together in 1821 after their return to Berlin. From this time on he mainly devoted himself to portrait sculpture.

In 1826 he became a member, then in 1829 professor at the Berlin Academy of the Arts . He also became a member of the Berlin Masonic Lodge "Pythagoras zum Flammenden Stern".
