Karl Georg von Raumer (born November 16, 1753 in Dessau , † July 2, 1833 in Berlin ) was a German Legation Councilor and director of the Secret State Archives .

origin

Karl Georg von Raumer was the grandson of the Anhalt Government President Johann Georg von Raumer and the son of the Anhalt Government Director Leopold Gustav Dietrich von Raumer (1726–1788) and Anna Eleonore von Waldow (1724–1796). She was the daughter of the Prussian government president and cathedral provost Christoph Otto von Waldow auf Bernstein in the Neumark and lady-in-waiting of the princesses Anna Luise Föhse and Gisela Agnes von Rath zu Anhalt-Dessau . His brothers were Major General Karl Heinrich Friedrich (1757–1831), Chamber Director Georg Friedrich (1755–1822), and the later Prussian Lieutenant General Eugen (1758–1823).

Live and act

After his school days, he moved to Stargard in Pomerania on the recommendation of his uncle Karl Albrecht Friedrich von Raumer , where he was stationed as a general staff officer in Stargard at that time. Here he attended the so-called "Gröningen Collegium" from 1769 and two years later moved to the University of Leipzig , where he studied law and philosophy with Karl Ferdinand Hommel . After passing his exam, he began his career in the Prussian civil service as a trainee lawyer at the Berlin Court of Appeal , which appointed him assessor of the First Senate in 1780 after passing the state examination. Since Raumer was not a native of Prussia, the next promotion to the chamber judge could only be granted after the death of Friedrich II , when the promotion permits had been relaxed. This was followed by assignments as a judicial advisor in the Kurmärkischen pupil college and in the French higher court, before he moved in 1792 as clerk for imperial and legal affairs in the cabinet ministry, the later ministry for foreign affairs.

Here Raumer was appointed Secret Legation Councilor in 1797 and, in 1803, for his services in the Ministry of Justice under Eberhard von der Reck, he was appointed Secret Senior Justice Councilor. In 1809 he was a member of the Peace Enforcement Commission, which dealt with the implementation of the peace negotiations in Tilsit , and from 1811 the General Order Commission and the Cathedral Church Directorate, whose presidency he took over a few years later. Finally, in 1814, Raumer was initially entrusted with the provisional and in 1818 with the official management of the second section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under the State Chancellor Karl August von Hardenberg , he was promoted to lecturing councilor first class and became a member of the Council of State. In addition, from 1819 Raumer headed the senior censorship board as president, but gave up the leadership of the cathedral church directorate.

A few months before Hardenberg's death and as part of a complete reorganization of the Secret State Archives, the latter initially appointed Karl Georg von Raumer as archive director on a part-time basis. However, this task required so much effort that Raumer, who has meanwhile been promoted to the Real Secret Council since 1825, asked for his release from the State Council in 1829 and from the foreign service in 1832 and then headed the archive full-time until his death.

family

Karl Georg von Raumer was married to Luise Lecke, a daughter of the Iserlohn mayor Johann Caspar Lecke , and each had four sons and daughters with her. Just a few months before his death, he made sure that his son Georg Wilhelm von Raumer was established as his successor in the office of archive director, which he then took over in 1842.

Honors

For his tireless service to the Prussian state, Raumer was awarded the 3rd Class Red Eagle Order in 1810 , then in 1817 with the 2nd class with oak leaves and finally in 1829 received the first class with oak leaves.

In 1825, while he was still alive, the sculptor Karl Wichmann made a bust in his honor and on the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service , which was placed in the Secret State Archives after his death.
