Winckelmann memorial
The Winckelmann Monument is a protected monument of the German archaeologist and writer Johann Joachim Winckelmann in Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt . It is located in the center of Winckelmannplatz in the old town of Stendal opposite the St. Mary's Church .
Design and history
The monument, designed in the style of late classicism , goes back to a design by Ludwig Wichmann from 1843 and was erected between 1846 and 1859 after a long planning period. The bronze sculpture representing Winckelmann stands on a high stone base. At the same time as the inauguration of the monument in 1859, the square was named Winckelmannplatz .
At the foot of the sculpture is the inscription:

A further dedication is noted on the base:
