Mutio Vitelleschi
Mutio Vitelleschi SJ or Muzio Vitelleschi (* December 2, 1563 in Rome ; † February 9, 1645 ibid) was a Jesuit priest and the 6th general of the Societas Jesu .
Life
At the age of 20 Vitelleschi joined the Societas Jesu on August 15, 1583. He studied at various schools of the order and was assigned the post of lecturer immediately after graduation. In 1593 he was appointed rector of the English College in Rome.
His further career led Vitelleschi to the office of Provincial of Rome and Naples . As such he was also vicar general of the order. When the 5th general of the order, Claudio Acquaviva, died on January 31, 1615 , on November 15 of the same year the general assembly of the order elected Vitelleschi as the 6th general and thus the highest authority of the order.
Under Vitelleschi's leadership, the order expanded from January 1617; it was used in Tibet , Tonking , Maranon, etc. a. missionized and elevated England to an independent religious province. The few difficulties were more of a political nature, arose in France and were caused by Richelieu .
In 1630 Vitelleschi appealed against disciplinary action in the " Spee case ", but could not prevent his impeachment in 1631. In January 1632 he spoke out in favor of Spees being reinstated as professor of moral theology, but in August of the same year, after an anonymous edition of the Cautio Criminalis had appeared , he would be released from the Society of Jesus.
Mutio Vitelleschi died on February 9, 1645 at the age of 82.
