Øssur Havgrímsson [ œs: ʊɹ haugrʊimsːɔn ] (* 960 in Hov , Faroe Islands , † 983 in Skúvoy , Faroe Islands) was Faroese According to a son of the Faroese Goden Havgrímur .

All biographical information in this article is based on the Faroese saga and is therefore not historically proven beyond doubt.

When his father was killed in connection with the murder of Brestir and Beinir in 970 , the Viking chief Tróndur í Gøtu took care of the 10-year-old boy. When Øssur was growing up, Tróndur gave him the daughter of one of the best farmers in the Faroe Islands as a wife.

Øssur also got his father's farm in Hov and the property of Brestir and Beinir on Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun . It could have been around 980 when the word spread in the Faroe Islands that Sigmundur Brestisson and Tóri Beinirsson (the sons of Brestir and Beinir, they were in Norway at the time ) would return to avenge the deaths of their fathers and to regain their possessions on Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun. So Øssur is said to have fortified the court on Skúvoy for the expected fight.

This fight is dated to 983 after Sigmundur and Tóri returned from Norway. Øssur is said to have suggested a civil arbitration to Sigmundur on the part of the best men in the Faroe Islands , but the latter did not agree and killed him (probably in a duel). Øssur's men surrendered to the superiority of at least 50 men in Sigmundur's entourage.

Øssur left behind the son Leivur Øssurson , who also grew up with Tróndur í Gøtu after his father was killed.
