Havgrímur
Havgrímur (* in the 10th century in Hov , Faroe Islands ; † 970 in Stóra Dímun ; often also called Hafgrim ) was one of the most important Viking chiefs in the Faroe Islands in his time .
Havgrímur was a Gode and priests ( blótsmaður mikil ) of the North Germanic religion to the Viking Age in the Faroe Islands . Half of the archipelago was under him, while the other half was controlled by Brestir Sigmundsson and his brother Beinir Sigmundsson . Havgrímur had got his part as a fief from the Norwegian King Harald II. Graufell (ruled 961-970).
He was married to Guðrið , a daughter of Snæúlvur . Together they had the son Øssur . The Faroese According Havgrímur to a very quick temper and have had no particularly great intellect.
In 969 he was sitting at home in Hov with his friends Einar Suðringur and Eldjarn Kambhøttur . From this the dispute between Einar and Eldjarn developed as the trigger of the feud that would determine the archipelago for the next 65 years. When Havgrímur was defeated in this matter before the Althing on Tinganes , he forged the conspiracy in 970 for the murder of Brestir and Beinir . According to the Faroese saga, he took part in the murder personally. In the battle on Stóra Dímun , where the two were killed, he too fell with five of his men.
A menhir in Hov reminds of him. This stands upright, as it should be for men who died in battle. His grave is also here. It's a cairn. Next to it is a larger stone mound, which the locals say is the grave of his horse. An attempt was made to open the tomb in 1834 , but it was quickly demolished and there has been no further archaeological investigation since then.
His son Øssur Havgrímsson was 10 years old when Tróndur í Gøtu took him in.
