Beinir Sigmundsson (* 10th century in Skúvoy / Faroe Islands ; † 970 in Dímun ibid; mostly just Beinir or Beiner ) was together with his brother Brestir ruler over half of the Faroe Islands during the Viking Age .

Beinir was the son of Sigmund the Elder . He was in a relationship with Tóra , who gave birth to Tóri . Breinir and his brother were murdered by Havgrímur and Svínoy-Bjarne on their second farm on Stóra Dímun in 970 . ( see: Murder of Brestir and Beinir )

Brestir and Beinir are always mentioned in the same breath in the Faroese saga and the following stories, so their common story is covered in the article about Brestir Sigmundsson , the father of Sigmund Brestisson .

A more recent theory says that Beinir was the son of Ann Naddodsdóttir , the daughter of Naddoddur , and therefore possibly already a (Celtic) Christian, and his real name was Beinir MacDroan.

Surname

The male first name Beinir is of Old Norse origin and comes from the noun beinir ("help, service, helper").
