Juan Cardinal Sandoval Íñiguez (born March 28, 1933 in Yahualica , Mexico ) is Archbishop Emeritus of Guadalajara .

Life

Juan Sandoval Iñiguez comes from an extended family with twelve children. At the age of twelve he entered the seminary of Guadalajara and studied there up to the intermediate philosophical examination. He then moved to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he received his doctorate in theology in the field of dogmatics in 1960 . He was ordained a priest on October 26, 1957 by Archbishop Antonio Samorè , but was released for further studies.

From 1961 he worked at the diocesan seminary of Guadalajara as spiritual rector and disciplinary prefect. At the same time he lectured at the Philosophical Faculty of Guadalajara in various fields. From 1967 to 1971 he supervised the students of the preparatory courses of the Guadalajara seminary as prefect. From 1971 to 1980 he was Deputy Regens of the Guadalajara Seminary, then from 1980 to 1988 Regens.

On April 30, 1988 Sandoval Iñiguez of received Manuel Talamas Camandari the episcopal ordination after March 3 of that year by Pope John Paul II. To Coadjutor Bishop of Ciudad Juárez had been appointed. Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Delegate in Mexico, Archbishop Girolamo Prigione , and the Archbishop of Guadalajara , Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo . With the resignation of Manuel Talamás Camandari on July 11, 1992, he succeeded him as Bishop of Ciudad Juárez.

In October 1992 he attended the fourth general conference of CELAM in Santo Domingo . Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Guadalajara on April 21, 1994. On November 26th of the same year he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Nostra Signora di Guadalupe e San Filippo Martire in the college of cardinals . After the death of John Paul II, Cardinal Sandoval attended the 2005 conclave . In May 2007 he took part in the fifth general conference of CELAM in Aparecida .

On December 7, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation put forward by Juan Cardinal Sandoval Íñiguez for reasons of age. Until the inauguration of his successor Francisco Robles Ortega on February 7, 2012, he headed the Archdiocese of Guadalajara as Apostolic Administrator . He attended the 2013 conclave as one of the oldest cardinals entitled to vote .

In December 2017, at a mass, Cardinal Sandoval Íñiguez described abortion as "as serious a crime as executions by organized crime".
