Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo
Juan Jesús Cardinal Posadas Ocampo (born November 10, 1926 in Salvatierra , Mexico , † May 24, 1993 in Guadalajara ) was Archbishop of Guadalajara .
Life
Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo received his theological training in the seminary of Morelia . He was ordained a priest on September 23, 1950 and initially worked as a parish chaplain, before he was appointed as a lecturer, prefect of studies and deputy seminar leader in the training of the next generation of priests.
On March 21, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Tijuana . The Archbishop of Morelia , Manuel Martín del Campo Padilla , ordained him episcopal on June 15 of the same year. Co-consecrators were his predecessor Alfredo Galindo Mendoza MSpS and Auxiliary Bishop Román Acevedo Rojas from Morelia.
Pope John Paul II commissioned him on December 28, 1982 with the direction of the diocese of Cuernavaca and on May 15, 1987 appointed him Archbishop of Guadalajara .
On June 28, 1991 Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo was admitted to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church Nostra Signora di Guadalupe e San Filippo Martire . He was murdered on May 24, 1993 at Guadalajara airport and buried in the local cathedral .
The assassin Jorge Humberto Rodriguez Banuelos was sentenced to forty years in prison in 2005. Six other people were killed in the assassination attempt on the archbishop. The Tijuana cartel is suspected as the client . The cardinal had spoken out against organized crime and drug traffickers in his diocese on several occasions. With the shooting at the airport of Guadalajara, where the archbishop wanted to pick up the apostolic nuncio , a gang demonstratively established their supposed power in the state and society of this region and eliminated an uncomfortable moral authority.
