Sergio Méndez Arceo (born October 28, 1907 in Tlalpan / Mexico ; † February 5, 1992 in Morelos ) was a Mexican Roman Catholic clergyman, representative of the " theology of liberation ", from 1954 to 1972 member of the Mexican Academy of History and bishop from Cuernavaca .

Life

Méndez was ordained a priest on October 28, 1934 . He studied at the Gregorian University in Rome.

Pope Pius XII appointed Méndez on March 11, 1952 as Bishop of Cuernavaca . He was ordained episcopal on April 30th of the same year by the Archbishop of Mexico City , Luis María Martínez y Rodríguez . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Tulancingo , Miguel Darío Miranda y Gómez , and the Bishop of Zamora , José Gabriel Anaya y Diez de Bonilla .

He got involved on the side of the marginalized in Mexican society and relied on left-wing groups, which is why he was nicknamed " Red Bishop ".

As a council father, he participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on December 28, 1982.

Social activity

In June 1963 he conferred with other leading clergy in Latin America and the Cologne Vicar General Joseph Teusch about which projects the Catholic aid project “ Adveniat ” should support this year.

Bishop Méndez participated in the 1972 Congress of Christians for Socialism . He was the most important promoter of a discussion about the socialist theory of society, especially the Marxist , social change, religious phenomena and their effects on social developments in Latin America. He worked with the “ Centro de Información y Documentation Católica ” (CIDOC). The consequence of these activities was that the Vatican expelled him from all ecclesiastical offices and from participating in the courses for the development of the CIDOC program.

He was a teacher of Liberation Theology and the so-called Progressive Catholics . In the first stage he became the inspirer of the “ Independent Trade Union Movement ”, which was founded in the 1970s. He supported the establishment of the CETLALIC language school . He supported the formation of the Desarrollo Rural de Hidalgo AC (DERHGO), Hidalgo (Rural Development of Hidalgo) organization. DERHGO was founded in 1978 in Tulancingo / Hidalgo with the aim of improving the living conditions of the smallholder indigenous and non-indigenous population in the region by helping them to help themselves.

In 1980 Méndez was among the participants in the funeral service for the murdered Archbishop of San Salvador , Óscar Romero , at which 40 people were murdered by death squads .

In 1985 he was a participant in the VI. All-Christian Peace Assembly (ACFV) in Prague , where he gave one of the main presentations. The Assembly elected him to the Presidium and the Continuation of Work Committee (AFA).

Effects

  • The Sergio Méndez Arceo Foundation awards a national human rights award . On May 7, 2011, he was awarded to the United Council of Peoples for the Defense of the Río Verde COPUDEVER (Consejo de Pueblos Unidos por la Defensa del Río Verde) , which is committed against a planned hydropower plant in the state of Oaxaca .
  • Due to numerous violations of civil and political human rights in the region, the Comité Sergio Méndez Arceo, Pro Derechos Humanos de Tulancingo, AC was founded in 1990 as a subsidiary of DERHGO . It looks after the victims of violent attacks and offers courses and seminars on the subject of human rights.
