Archdiocese of San Salvador
The Archdiocese of San Salvador ( Latin Archidioecesis Sancti Salvatoris in America , Spanish Arquidiócesis de San Salvador ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in El Salvador .
history
The archbishopric was founded on September 28, 1842 by Pope Gregory XVI. founded as the diocese of San Salvador ("Sancti Salvatoris in America") out of the archdiocese of Guatemala . The first bishop was Jorge de Viteri y Ungo . By Pope Pius X. the diocese was elevated to an archbishopric on February 11, 1913; the first archbishop was Antonio Adolfo Pérez y Aguilar .
Several suffragan dioceses were established, namely the Diocese of San Miguel and the Diocese of Santa Ana (1913), the Diocese of San Vicente (1943), the Diocese of Santiago de María (1954), the Diocese of Sonsonate (1986), the Dioceses of Chalatenango and Zacatecoluca ( 1987).
