Gregorio Rosa Chavez

Gregorio Cardinal Rosa Chávez (born September 3, 1942 in Sociedad , El Salvador ) is a Salvadoran clergyman and theologian, auxiliary bishop in San Salvador and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Gregorio Rosa Chávez studied philosophy and theology at the Seminario Central San José de la Montaña in San Salvador (1962–1964; 1966–1969). He graduated from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in communication science (1973–1976).

On January 24, 1970, he received the sacrament of ordination through José Eduardo Álvarez Ramírez CM, Bishop of San Miguel . From 1970 to 1973 he was a pastor in San Miguel, from 1971 to 1973 he also headed the diocesan radio station Radio Paz and the diocesan weekly newspaper Semanario Chaparrastique founded in 1915 . He was also a spiritual assistant to various associations and movements of the lay apostolate .

From 1977 to 1982 he was rector of the Seminario Central San José de la Montaña in San Salvador and professor of theology. He was a member of the Council of the Organization of Latin American Seminars (1979–1982).

Gregorio Rosa Chávez is also Vicar General of the Archdiocese. He is President of Caritas for Latin America and the Caribbean and of the national Caritas.

In the consistory of June 28, 2017 , Pope Francis accepted him as cardinal priest of Santissimo Sacramento a Tor de 'Schiavi in the college of cardinals . The takeover of his titular church took place four days later. As a result of his admission to the College of Cardinals, Gregorio Rosa Chávez is the only auxiliary bishop in the world to hold the office of cardinal.

On December 23, 2017, the Pope appointed him a member of the Dicastery for the Holistic Development of Man .

Act

Gregorio Rosa Chávez's foster father was Óscar Romero , Archbishop of El Salvador and liberation theologian , who was beatified by Pope Francis in 2015 , who was shot as a celebrant during a mass by a soldier charged with the murder by the Fuerza Armada de El Salvador . His death marked the beginning of the civil war in El Salvador .

Rosa Chavez is considered to be the guardian of Romero's spiritual and ecclesiastical legacy.

Chávez is an ambassador for peace beyond national borders, as an advocate for the poor and the youth and as a mediator in conflicts. He repeatedly denounced violence and brutality in his home country and called for peace talks between the government and the armed gangs. He accused Europe of a failed refugee policy.
