Ernst Laaff

Ernst Laaff (born November 4, 1903 in Wiesbaden , † September 12, 1987 in Baden-Baden ) was a German musician , professor and university rector .

Life

Ernst Laaff was born on November 4, 1903 in Wiesbaden. After finishing school he first studied in Wiesbaden. He then went to Frankfurt am Main , Munich and Berlin , where he continued his studies. In Berlin he was taught by Arnold Schering among others . After completing his studies, he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Franz Schubert's symphonies. A short time later, the Collegium musicum of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz was re-established , where he started teaching as a teacher. In 1938 he became head of the magazine department of the Schott publishing house in Mainz . Shortly afterwards he also became an authorized representative of the publishing house. In the post-war period he founded the magazine "Das Musikleben" at Schott-Verlag.

In 1949 he finally became a professor. At the same time he founded the Mainz University of Music and directed it until 1972. He was active as a musician not only in early music , illustrated by original instruments, but also in new music . During his 24-year function as head of the Mainz University of Music, he also acted politically in cooperation with local politicians . Here his calm and controlled charisma appeared as a good character trait for his actions. During this time he also worked as a conductor . He finally retired in 1972 at the age of 69. At the same time he ended his numerous voluntary commitments. A year later, the Mainz University of Music was integrated into the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

In old age he became seriously ill. He finally died after a long illness on September 12, 1987 in Baden-Baden. He was buried in the main cemetery in Baden-Baden .
