José Cardinal Salazar López

José Cardinal Salazar López (born January 12, 1910 in Ameca , Mexico , † July 9, 1991 in Guadalajara ) was Archbishop of Guadalajara .

Life

José Salazar López studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Guadalajara and Rome . He received on 26 May 1934, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a parish pastor, teacher, prefect of studies and seminar leader in his home diocese. In that year he was Apostolic Visitator for the seminaries of Puebla and Durango .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on May 22, 1961 titular bishop of Prusias ad Hypium and coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Zamora . The episcopal ordination received José Salazar López on 20 August of the same year by the Archbishop of Guadalajara, Cardinal Joseph Garibi y Rivera ; Co- consecrators were the Coadjutor Archbishop of Guadalajara, Francisco Javier Nuño y Guerrero , and the Bishop of Zamora, José Gabriel Anaya y Diez de Bonilla .

He took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 and succeeded José Gabriel Anaya y Diez de Bonillas as Bishop of Zamora on September 15, 1967.

On February 21, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him . Archbishop of Guadalajara and took him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Emerenziana a Tor Fiorenza in the college of cardinals . Salazar López was a participant in the August 1978 conclave , in which John Paul I was elected, and in the October 1978 conclave , which ended with the election of John Paul II . The latter accepted his resignation on May 15, 1987, which Salazar López had submitted as early as 1985 when he reached the age of 75 in accordance with the norm laid down in the Codex iuris canonici .

José Salazar López died on July 9, 1991 in Guadalajara and was buried in the local cathedral .
