Cardinal José Garibi y Rivera , also known as José Garibi Rivera (born January 30, 1889 in Guadalajara , Mexico , † May 27, 1972 ibid) was a Mexican clergyman and Archbishop of Guadalajara .

Life

José Garibi y Rivera studied in Guadalajara and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he lived as an alum in the Pontifical Latin American College "Pius" , the subjects of Catholic theology and philosophy . He received on 25 February 1912, the sacrament of the priesthood by the Archbishop of Guadalajara, José de Jesús Ortíz y Rodríguez , and was then as a parish pastor, teacher and staff of the diocesan curia in Guadalajara operates. In 1926 he was temporarily imprisoned for political reasons.

On December 16, 1929, Pope Pius XI appointed him . as titular bishop of Rhosus and auxiliary bishop in Guadalajara. The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Francisco Orozco y Jiménez on 7 May of the following year; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of San Luis Potosí , Miguel María de la Mora y Mora , and the Bishop of Zacatecas , Ignacio Placencia y Moreira . On December 22, 1934, he was named Titular Archbishop of Bizya and Coadjutor Archbishop of Guadalajara. With the death of Francisco Orozco y Jiménez 'on February 18, 1936, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Guadalajara.

Pope John XXIII took José Garibi Rivera on December 15, 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Onofrio in the college of cardinals . José Garibi Cardinal Rivera participated in the Second Vatican Council and the Conclave in 1963 from 1962 to 1965 . He resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara in 1969 for reasons of age.

He died on May 27, 1972 in Guadalajara and was buried in the local cathedral .
