The Pontifical Latin American College "Pius" ( Spanish : Pontificio Colegio Pío Latino Americano ) is a papal college in Rome .

history

On November 21, 1858, the "Latin American Seminary" for the formation of priests for Latin America was founded by the Chilean priest José Ignacio Víctor Eyzaguirre, based at the Basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome. 1867 was the rector Francisco Vannutelli SJ , by Pope Pius IX. granted permission to rename the seminary to Pius Latin American Seminar . On March 12, 1871 Pope Pius IX. appoint a graduate of the seminary José María Ignacio Montes de Oca y Obregón as bishop.

With a decree of the Curia of March 19, 1905, the college was granted papal recognition as a university. In 1905 the management of the college was transferred to the Society of Jesus .

By 1978, 3,187 students were studying at the university, of which 18 were cardinals, 87 archbishops and 194 bishops.
