Luuk Johannes van Middelaar (born May 9, 1973 in Eindhoven ) is a Dutch historian and political philosopher . From December 2009 to 2014 he was a member of the cabinet of the Belgian Herman van Rompuy , the first President of the European Council . He inspired his speech on the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize award to the European Union. He became known through his book From the Continent to the Union - Present and History of United Europe .

Life

Van Middelaar studied history and philosophy at the University of Groningen and at the Center Raymond Aron of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociale in Paris. With his master's thesis Politicide he won the “Prix de Paris”; In 2010 he was named for De passage naar Europa. Geschiedenis van een begin was awarded the Socratesbeker as the best Dutch-language philosophical book of the previous year . In this he recognizes in the Russian émigré Alexandre Kojève , who held lectures on Hegel's phenomenology in Paris after 1930 , a formative control point for the lecture audiences, including Maurice Merleau-Ponty , Jean-Paul Sartre , Raymond Aron , Georges Bataille , Jacques Lacan , Raymond Queneau and André Breton . These thinkers wavered between utopia and terror between 1945 and 1989.

For a time van Middelaar was a consultant and speechwriter at Frits Bolkestein (2002-2004) and Jozias van Aartsen (2004-2006). In 2009 he received the Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam . In 2012 he received the European Book Prize and in the same year the “Prix Louis Marin ” of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques for The Passage to Europe . Since 2015 he has had a weekly political column in the NRC Handelsblad . In 2015 he was appointed Professor of Foundations and Practice of the European Union and its Institutions at the University of Leiden . He also holds the chair for “European Values” at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium. Since 2018 he has been a member of the Dutch Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken , which advises the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
