Siedentop was particularly concerned with the French liberalism of the 19th century. He is also a biographer of Alexis de Tocqueville and author of the book Democracy in Europe , published in 2000 and translated into German in 2002. In it he compares European democracy and unification with the development of the US state. He also worked on the Financial Times . In 2014 his latest work, Inventing the Individual, was published. The Origins of Western Liberalism , which was released in 2015 in German translation.

The invention of the individual. Liberalism and the Western World

Siedentop describes, justifies and proves in his 476-page book that Western liberalism and secularism arose from Christian beliefs such as equality and freedom. Through charity and persuasiveness, the Christian faith spread in the late Roman Empire and then shaped European culture significantly. In addition to education, churches and monasteries had also promoted equality and individuality of people and broke the ancient family structure under the authoritarian leadership of the pater familias with its religiously motivated inequality. These moral values, which have been achieved over long periods of time, are now endangered by fundamentalism and authoritarian regimes.

For antiquity, Siedentop mainly refers to the work The Ancient State of the French historian Fustel de Coulanges , for early Christianity to the Irish historian and Augustine specialist Peter Brown and for the Middle Ages to the French writer François Guizot . His theses met with a great response, on the one hand through broad approval and on the other hand through criticism and rejection. Critics have accused him of using too many secondary sources, but Siedentop justified his choice of sources.
