Christ in the Present (proper spelling: CHRIST IN DER GEGENWART; CIG) is an independent, reform-oriented, supraregional Catholic weekly magazine with an ecumenical focus. It is published by Verlag Herder ( Freiburg im Breisgau ) and is financed from subscriptions and inserts / advertisements.

history

Immediately after the Second World War the “Freiburg Catholic Church Gazette” was founded by Karl Färber as a regional ecclesiastical publication in southwest Germany . From this a zone edition developed in 1948, which, with the permission of the French occupation, could be distributed throughout their entire zone. The magazine primarily addressed readers who had higher religious and theological demands. In 1949 it was renamed “The Christian Sunday” and distributed nationwide.

In 1967, under the impression of the Council renewal , the paper was given the current title “Christ in the Present” (CIG). Since January 2008, the beginning of the sixtieth year, CIG has been appearing in a colored layout.

CIG celebrated its seventieth anniversary on September 8, 2018 in Dresden with a readers' conference under the title God? - Courage for religion in modern society with well-known speakers.

Alignment

Christian in the present wants to give impulses for a modern Christianity and counteract the spiritual self-isolation of Christians and the Church. The magazine contains news from church, culture and society as well as analyzes of current political events, biblical interpretations and suggestions for meditation, liturgy and prayer.

According to its self-portrayal, the magazine is aimed at everyone who struggles for a Christian lifestyle in conversation with science, art, culture and politics and wants to invite you to be a critical Christian: enlightened, mystical, hopeful.

readership

According to an Allensbach survey from 2004, almost three quarters of all readers have a higher school leaving certificate, 59 percent have a university degree. 53 percent of recipients are men, 47 percent women. The great majority of the readers are Catholic , a small part Protestant . 89 percent say that they go to church every Sunday .

The website offers a “reader forum” with four sections for reader information and participation.

Side dishes

Once a month, a twelve-page special “Pictures of the Present” is enclosed. In spring and autumn, at the Leipzig Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair , the supplement “Books of the Present” appears.
