Kodomo no Jikan ( Jap. こどものじかん , dt. "Is the time a child") is one of the mangakas Kaworu Watashiya written and illustrated manganese series .

The plot focuses on the elementary school teacher Daisuke Aoki, who has just finished his training. He is struggling with the fact that one of his elementary school students, Rin Kokonoe, is in love with him. The manga series, which ran from 2005 to 2013, caused a sensation because of its portrayal of naked minors, which ultimately led to foreign licensees refusing to publish the series. In 2007 , the manga was accompanied by an anime television series that was censored for television broadcasts, as well as several OVA publications and radio plays .

action

Daisuke Aoki, 23, starts working as a teacher at a primary school . He teaches class 3-1 (the first class of the 3rd year). One student, the precocious and angry Rin Kokonoe, does not yet know how to properly assess her feelings and "falls in love" with him immediately. She goes so far as to claim to be Daisuke's friend. She approaches him sexually very aggressively, which Aoki, who is very uncomfortable with Rin's behavior, keeps getting into dangerous situations. The situation becomes more and more complicated as your friends, family and colleagues get involved too.

So he first has to find out that the student Mimi Usa is not present and can find out through Rin that his predecessor is said to have vented his aggression on Mimi. So he tries to get in touch with Mimi and can ultimately convince her to go back to school. He reunites his friends Rin, Mimi and Kuro. However, that doesn't make his everyday school life any easier, because Kuro Kagami in particular has a strong dislike for him. The naughty and spoiled girl feels drawn to Rin and uses every opportunity to embarrass him in front of the class. She is not embarrassed with swear words and often describes him as a virgin , which is also true. Daisuke has a good relationship with the busty and also still young teacher Hōin Kyōko, who tries to make it easier for him to start teaching. She is secretly in love with Daisuke, but every time she is disturbed by Rin and ignored by Daisuke, since he cannot imagine a relationship with her. Next to her, he is mainly confronted with the strict, textbook-based Sae Shirai. Sae has good family relationships with the school administration and finds herself in the dilemma of meeting the expectations of her traditional family. The only male colleague who is at his side is the older but relaxed-looking Kenta Oyajima, who only takes on a more important role in the relationship with Sae, with whom he falls in love, in later sections of the plot.

Until then, Daisuke is forced to deal more closely with the three girls and especially with Rin's family circumstances. He made the discovery that Rin has no parents and instead lives with her mother's busy cousin, Reiji Kokonoe. The thought that the relationship between Reiji and his adopted daughter Rin goes beyond the usual extent creeps into him. Ultimately, the reason for this is a love affair between Reiji and Rin's mother Aki Kokonoe. Rin's unnamed father separated from Aki during his pregnancy and abandoned the family. Reiji was also forced to leave his parents' home due to family problems and found shelter with Aki. From this, however, an intimate love relationship developed, in the middle of which was Rin. However, Aki dies a short time later, so that Reiji and Rin are left alone. The mentally stressed foster father has since developed a very intimate relationship with Rin, as he sees in her something like a substitute for Aki, which is also due to the very similar appearance. Knowing this, Daisuke assumes a critical situation and tries everything to prevent a potential attack by Reiji on Rin.

In addition to this focus, the illustrator Kaworu Watashiya also attached particular importance to the depiction of the development of the three girls in the puberty phase. Numerous smaller side stories are included, for example, accompanying Mimi when she bought her first bra, her first rule, or in the case of Rin when she discovered her body. Daisuke is also involved here as a teacher, which puts him as an “unsuspecting virgin” before various hard tests, as he is particularly dependent on the advice of others.

Characters

Daisuke Aoki ( 青木 大 介 , Aoki Daisuke )
He is the good-natured class teacher of grade 3-1 (later 4-1) and the protagonist of the series. According to his own statements, he was the product of a normal, uneventful childhood, which he ended as an above-average student and athlete . During his studies he had been a member of the university's athletics club. Despite his good career, he was denied contact and relationships with women because of his own attitude.
At school, as a beginner, he is confronted with children who promptly discover this weak point in his past and repeatedly exploit it. In particular, his status as a Virgo is seen by them as a sign of weakness.
Rin Kokonoe ( 九重 り ん , Kokonoe Rin )
She is a mischievous, beautiful, young girl who goes to elementary school and is in the class taught by Daisuke Aoki with her best friends Kuro Kagami and Mimi Usa. She was raised by her single mother for five years until she became seriously ill and died. Since then, she has lived under the care of her mother's cousin, Reiji, who had previously entered into a relationship with her mother.
At school, she likes to take on the leadership role and falls in love with her class teacher, whom she also likes to strain and try to fool. So she takes a rival position to Kyōko Hōin, who, as Daisuke's work colleague, is also interested in the newcomer.
Kuro Kagami ( 鏡 黒 , Kagami Kuro )
She is an easily irritable, little classmate of Rin and Mimi. She is also a spoiled, selfish child of wealthy parents who spend little time with Kagami and prefer to shower her with money instead. Accordingly, she leads a life of her own and has strong problems subordinating herself to others - especially Daisuke, whom she often refers to directly as a “virgin”.
Sexually she makes a very experienced impression for a girl of her age, although she lags far behind the other girls in physical development. In addition, she shows strong tendencies towards lesbian behavior , which become clear in her relationship with Rin and, with more advanced action, also with the teacher Sae Shirai.
While most of the students wear normal clothes, she often wears clothes in the style of a Gothic Lolita , which she sometimes combines with cat ears like a nekomimi . Based on this, she is also symbolized as a cat in humorous scenes by the draftsman Kaworu Watashiya .
Mimi Usa ( 宇佐 美 々 , Usa Mimi )
Mimi is a very reserved girl, who wears glasses and is withdrawn. It forms the opposite pole to Kuro, as it is well advanced in physical development, but has almost no knowledge in this regard. Because of her reluctance, she was initially verbally bullied by her former class teacher Nakamura, and later teased by the other students because of her physical development.
With an advanced plot and an increase in experience, Mimi falls in love with Reiji, who, however, has a much greater interest in Rin, which, however, also leads to her becoming a little more researched and coming to terms with her body. Like Kuro, she is repeatedly portrayed as an animal, in her case a hare.

Origin and publications

Manga

The first chapter of the series was published as a two-part "pilot" issue within the Japanese Seinen magazine Comic High! on March 2, 2004. Due to the positive response, Kaworu Watashiya expanded the title into a full manga. The publication of the individual chapters also took place in Comic High! from Vol. 1 from May 22, 2005 to Vol. 97 from April 22, 2013. Futabasha is responsible for the publication of the magazine . The chapters were summarized as a tankōbon 13 bound editions . Since the pilot chapter was published in advance, these chapters have been revised and slightly expanded in the bound editions before being published again.

The manga was licensed for publication in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment and was to be published under the title Nymphet at the express request of the author . Due to the controversial content, the Los Angeles- based company decided not to publish the manga. Nymphet refers to a sexually precocious, attractive girl as it was also used in Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita to describe the eponymous figure.

Anime

In 2007, produced by Studio Barcelona a Anime - television series , in which Eiji Suganuma directed. The character design was done by Masakazu Ishikawa , while Ayu Kawamoto took over the artistic direction.

On 12 September 2007, the uncensored, thirty minute was OVA episode Kodomo no Jikan: Yasumi Jikan - Anata ga Watashi ni Kureta mono ( こどものじかんやすみじかん~あなたがわたしにくれたもの~ , the time dt "one. Child: Pausenzeit - Das what you gave me ”) published in advance of the upcoming broadcast of the anime and offered both on the official website and together with a limited fourth edition of the manga.

The television series was originally scheduled to air on October 11, 2007, but both television networks - TV Saitama and Mie TV - removed this date from their schedules. In an official statement, TV Saitama justified its decision by saying that after incidents of the past few days, such as the arrest of Takayuki Hosoda , a notorious child pornographer who turned out to be the second director of a primary school, was unthinkable. The plans of the channels Chiba TV and KBS Kyōto to send the series, however, did not change. The 12 episodes were shown on Japanese television from October 12, 2007 to December 28, 2007.

The series shown on television was heavily censored. Often revealing scenes were covered with harmless animations and the obscene language was often faded out, which made the series incomprehensible to the audience in some scenes. The uncensored version of the anime is to be released on a total of 6 DVDs, each with two episodes. The first and second DVDs were released on December 21, 2007 and January 25, 2008, respectively. The remainder are to appear at intervals of one month by May 23, 2008.

For the second OVA Kodomo no Jikan: 2-gakki ( こ ど も の じ か ん 2 学期 , ~: ni-gakki , dt. "The time of a child: 2nd Tertial ") became the limited edition of the fifth manga volume on July 11th 2008 a DVD with the first excerpts, and the sixth manga volume from January 21, 2009 a "zero" episode enclosed. The first episode was finally published on February 20, the second on April 24, and the third on July 24, 2009.

The limited volume 9 of January 21, 2011 was another OVA called Kodomo no Jikan - Kodomo no Natsu Jikan ( こ ど も の じ か ん 〜 こ ど も の な d じ か ん 〜 , dt. "~: The time in the summer of a child").

Conception

The use of human sexual behavior as a means of working out characters is quite a concept that is used in novels. In the case of Kodomo no Jikan, however, this is seen very differently, as most of the main characters are still underage children. The exposure of children as sexually inclined beings, with their own rights, feelings and desires, is not a widespread or accepted way of thinking and is often aggressively opposed. Lolicon elements, regarded as perverse, are used again and again to describe the development of the characters with the help of fan service and suggestive representation. The aspects range from unresolved childhood trauma to psychological weaknesses and complicated sexual orientation.

Rin Kokonoe is portrayed in such a way that she tries again and again to seduce her teacher by all means. Although this starts out as a simple gimmick within the series and is used as a running gag , this relationship quickly evolves into something serious. Kuro Kagami, on the other hand, does not manage to show her lesbian feelings towards Rin, but at the same time tries to expose her "romantic rival", Aoki, in every respect. In general, it can be stated that Rin and Kuro have a very extensive sexual knowledge for their age. The counterpart to this is the very reserved Mimi Usa, who longs for acceptance and is looking for her own identity. Although she is much more developed physically than her friends, she has the least sexual knowledge.
