Philippe Van Parijs (born May 23, 1951 in Brussels ) is a Belgian philosopher and economist.

He studied philosophy , political economy , sociology , law and linguistics and received a PhD in philosophy from Oxford . As a professor, he headed the Hoover Chair in Economics and Social Ethics at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium and was a visiting professor of philosophy at Harvard University .

Unconditional basic income

Van Parijs is best known for his advocacy of an unconditional basic income and his academic work on the subject. In 1986 he founded the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN, German: global network basic income, formerly Basic Income European Network), of which he was also secretary. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Basic Income Network , the German organization in BIEN. Important works that have shaped the international discussion about a basic income are Arguing for Basic Income. Ethical foundations for a radical reform ( Lit .: Van Parijs, 1992) and Real Freedom for All: What (if anything) can justify capitalism? ( Lit .: Van Parijs, 1995)

Language justice and language control

Another suggestion by van Parijs is the language tax , according to which the country or countries whose language has established itself as the lingua franca should pay support to all other countries for training in this language. But he himself sees this as unrealistic.

Award

In 2001 Van Parijs was awarded the Francqui Prize , the highest Belgian academic award.
