Pierre Rosanvallon (born January 1, 1948 in Blois , France ) is a French historian and intellectual. In his writings he deals mainly with the history of democracy, the political model of France, the role of the state and the problem of social justice in today's society.

Since 2001 he has been Professor of Modern History at the Collège de France and Directeur d'Études at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales .

Studies and professional career

Rosanvallon graduated from the École des hautes études commerciales (Paris) (HEC). He initially worked as a functionary of the trade union confederation CFDT and as editor-in-chief of the magazine CFDT Aujourd'hui , published by this organization , and joined the PSU and later the PS .

In 1982 he founded the Fondation Saint-Simon together with François Furet , which existed until December 31, 1999.

In 1995 he endorsed the CFDT's position on the part of the social security reform related to health insurance presented by the Juppé government. In particular, he signed a petition on the subject, which was published in Le Monde .

Rosanvallon was one of the most important theorists of collective self-government , which was especially promoted by the CFDT . With his book L'Age de l'autogestion he stands in the philosophical tradition of Marx and Tocqueville. In it he announces a "rehabilitation of the political" on the way of self-administration.

République des Idées and La Vie des Idées

Pierre Rosanvallon has represented moderate left (social liberal) political positions in recent years and criticizes the fixation on the state and the political nostalgia in parts of the French left. In 2002, Rosanvallon founded the République des Idées , a kind of think tank , which he chairs , with financial support from large companies such as Altadis , Lafarge , the AGF , EDF , and Air France . He wants to establish a “new social criticism” that is to break away from what he calls “archaeoradicalism” or “radical nostalgic ideology”. Among other things, Rosanvallon organized a discussion forum with fellow philosophers and social scientists in Grenoble in 2006 under the title nouvelle critique sociale . In May 2009 he organized a forum at the Maison de la Culture in Grenoble as part of the République des Idées under the motto “Réinventer la Démocratie”. In his publications, Rosanvallon used the example of Russia and Turkey to show how easily a presidential democracy can be converted into an authoritarian system.

The group around Rosanvallon publishes a magazine called La Vie des Idées , as well as a series of books at the Éditions du Seuil .
