The Sparkasse Bielefeld Foundation has been awarding the Bielefeld Science Prize every two years since 2004 . The prize is awarded in memory of Niklas Luhmann , the world-famous Bielefeld sociologist. Luhmann worked as an outstanding researcher and teacher at Bielefeld University from its founding in 1969 until his death in 1998 . His work is committed to the power of theory and extends to all aspects of modern society. Luhmann's extensive legal, historical and philosophical knowledge, his broad interest in the life sciences, pedagogy, ethics and aesthetics and his central concern of formulating a comprehensive system theory of social modernization should be the impetus and obligation for the model of interdisciplinary and problem-free research. The Bielefeld Science Prize is also committed to this concern. Scientists from all over the world can be nominated for the award whose research - especially in the fields mentioned - meets the highest standards and who, like Niklas Luhmann, have made an outstanding contribution to interdisciplinary research .

The Sparkasse Bielefeld Foundation is donating the “Bielefeld Science Prize”, endowed with 25,000 euros, as part of its promotion of science and research.
