Monique Canto-Sperber (born May 14, 1954 in Algeria ) is a French philosopher and historian of philosophy . From 2005 to 2012 she was director of the École normal supérieure , Paris .

Life

Canto sparrowhawk grew up in French Algeria and came to metropolitan France in 1964. She attended the Lycée Racine and the Lycée Condorcet in Paris , as well as the École normal supérieure de jeunes filles in Sèvres . She received her doctorate in philosophy and an agrégation in philosophy. She then taught at the University of Rouen and the University of Picardy in Amiens . In 1993 she joined the CNRS as Director de recherche . From 2001 to 2004 she was a member of the Comité consultatif national d'éthique , until 2007 its vice-president. In 2005 she was appointed director of the École Normale Supérieure. From 2006 to 2010 she was also a professor in the Département des humanités et sciences sociales of the École polytechnique and Directrice d'études at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales .

Awards

Canto-Sparrowhawk is an officer of the Légion d'honneur , officer of the Ordre national du Mérite and chevalier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .

Research areas

Her areas of work are ethics and epistemology . In this context she also translated several dialogues of Plato ( Gorgias , Ion , Euthydemos , Menon , The State , Book VII). In 1993 she set up the Philosophy morale collection at Presses Universitaires de France , followed in 2000 by the Questions d'éthique collection . She herself published several monographs there. She has also written two monographs on the ethics of international relations and several monographs on the history and concept of left-wing liberalism .
