The Stockholm trolleybus was the trolleybus system in the Swedish capital Stockholm . It existed from 1941 to 1964 and was the largest network in Scandinavia with 193 vehicles and 13 lines . The operator of twelve lines was AB Stockholms Spårvägar (SS), the line to Kvarnholmen was operated by Transport AB Stockholm – Kvarnholmen (TSK).

history

The network was set up with the intention of completely replacing the Stockholm tram . On January 9, 1939, the decision to convert the first tram line was made. On January 20, 1941, tram line 11 (Mariebergsgatan - Kungsgatan  - Karlaplan) was replaced by trolleybus line 41 (Stadshagsplan - Karlaplan). On July 1, 1941, the line from Karlaplan was extended to Furusundsgatan. In the opening year, line 32 (Fridhemsplan - Kungsgatan - Karlaplan - Djurgårdsbron ) and the private line to Kvarnholmen went into operation. In addition to passenger transport, the latter also included goods transport . Lines 42 (October 1, 1943), 41E, 96 (both January 16, 1945), 31 (December 16, 1946, replaced 41E), 36 (November 24, 1947), 30 (February 9, 1948) followed by 1951. , 33 (November 8, 1948), 34 (February 1, 1949), 98 (October 26, 1949), 90 (October 2, 1950) and 91 (February 19, 1951). Individual lines were also slightly lengthened during this period. In addition to line 11, tram line 18 was switched to trolleybus operation (line 98).

As early as May 26, 1952, line 32 was moved from Djurgårdsbron to Sandhamnsplan and the Karlaplan - Djurgårdsbron section was closed. Line 31 was discontinued at the same time. On December 7, 1953, the 32 was extended to Frihamnen. In the 1950s, there were several relocations of the route, particularly along lines 33 and 34 in Norrmalm and Södermalm . At the same time, the lines were gradually discontinued. The second line was the 98 on November 17, 1955, six years after it was commissioned. On November 24, 1957, line 33 was relocated from Eriksdal to Danviken and line 36 from Odenplan to Nodra Station, while the SS stopped tram line 9. By May 5, 1961, lines 34 (November 24, 1957), 36 (July 1, 1958), 30 (August 10, 1959), 33 (August 27, 1960) and 96 (May 23, 1961) were from the Cityscape disappeared. The line to Kvarnholmen was last used in 1959. The operating company later became part of Storstockholms Lokaltrafik . The last day of operation on lines 32, 42, 90 and 91 was on April 5, 1964. The last line was the 41 on August 31, 1964.

Since 2009 the association Svenska Spårvägssällskapet (SSS), which also operates the Djurgårds line, has been planning to build a two-kilometer trolleybus route from Karlaplan to Skansen . The tram overhead line is to be used from Djurgårdsbron to Skansen. The project was not yet completed in May 2017.

The first F1 and F2 vehicles were manufactured by ASEA (electrical components), Hägglund & Söner (body) and Motala and Scania-Vabis (chassis). They had the same dimensions. Since the type F2 cars were prepared for conversion to right-hand traffic, they had the steering on the left-hand side. In 1941 the TSK had an F1 railcar and in 1948 acquired an F1 and an F2 each from the SS. Three other vehicles were sold to Helsinki . The 20 F1 railcars of the SS were in service until 1961, the 50 F2 railcars were retired by 1957. The F1 railcar 30505 has been preserved as a historic vehicle and is in the Stockholm Tram Museum .

The 122 type F3 railcars delivered from 1947 to 1950 came from the same manufacturers, but were larger than their predecessors. In terms of car construction, they were based on the Scania-Vabis B31 . The SS used the vehicles until they were decommissioned in 1964. Car 1585 is in the Stockholm Tram Museum. Car 74036 is looked after by the SSS in an exhibitionable condition. Wagenn 74038 was restored as a drivable historical vehicle after a fire damage until 2016.

The ten F4 railcars were four-axle articulated cars with a three-axle front carriage and a single-axle trailer. The vehicles designed by Alfa Romeo , Marelli and Stanga were unpopular with drivers, and the heating in particular was not up to the demands of the harsh winters. The vehicles delivered in 1950 were therefore taken out of stock after five years. The front end of car 74055 was rediscovered on a farm near Uppsala in 2012 ; after being recovered, it is in Malmköping and is looked after by the SSS.

For freight traffic to Kvarnholmen, TSK also had two overhead line trucks , the equipment of which corresponded to the type F1. They were initially equipped with their own loading area and were later converted into pure tractors.

Depots

The vehicles were initially located at the Hornsberg depot. From 1950 the trolleybuses were also housed in the main workshop of the Tunnelbana in Hammarby. The two farms were connected to the rest of the network by operating lines.

Accidents

Recovery of the crashed A30528 railcar from Essingesund, 1948

On November 24, 1948, there was a serious accident on the Stora Essingebron between the islands of Stora Essingen and Lilla Essingen . Railcar A30528 of type F2 was on route 96 when it struck an oncoming truck. The wheel nuts of the right front wheel got caught in the rear wheel of the truck, whereupon the front axle of the trolleybus was inevitably turned to the right. The truck loaded with concrete slabs was broken up in the subsequent collision, the trolleybus drove over the parapet and after a brief standstill fell 15 meters deep in Mälaren . Eleven inmates died in the accident and one survived.
